A home for those who are battling
On October 13th, I will be representing Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) at the 2019 Bank of America Chicago Marathon! As a member of Team RMHC, I am training, fundraising and ultimately running 26.2 miles to help keep families together.
To me, the Ronald McDonald Houses are about so much more than a marathon. Seven years ago, my family called numerous RMHC houses our home while we were moving through various stages of recovery following the car crash that almost took my daughter's lives and did take the life of my girlfriend, Katherine Atkins. The year following that day that would redefine our lives, our home was first the Southside Ronald McDonald House at the University of Chicago and then the downtown Ronald McDonald House by what is now the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. We also made the Ronald McDonald House at Riley Hospital home.
Without the Ronald McDonald House, we would have had a large strain place on us to keep our family close while we focused on the recovery of our daughters. But the houses were more than a temporary resting place. They became a place where we could feel the warmth of a home and have some semblance of normalcy and family while so much was up in the air. Many of the friends we made while at the houses we still are in touch with, sharing our journeys. And the staff at the houses were angels who lifted the weight of our souls on a daily basis.
This year, as I venture to tackle my first full marathon, I do it for and in dedication to all of those who did so much for my family. And I ask that all of my friends and family who are able, please contribute to this cause that helps so many families in times of great need.
