Running a marathon!
I will be running the Chicago marathon this year as part of the Ronald McDonald House team, in an effort to try to get some of you to donate to this charity.
You may not know what Ronald McDonald houses are – I certainly didn’t, until our younger daughter had to have heart surgery in Munich a few years ago.
<- This is my daughter in Munich, by the way, after her ordeal, about to conduct heart surgery on her rag doll, I think.
In addition to everything else you have to deal with, at one point the practical question arose: where could we stay, while our toddler is in intensive care, recovering from surgery? This is exactly what Ronald McDonald houses are for: they are houses built right next to hospitals, allowing families to stay close during times when being close is, well, all that we can do.
We were able to stay in a Ronald McDonald house, and I would wish the same opportunity to any family who has to go through a major medical intervention.
So I’ll be running as part of the Ronald McDonald house team in the hope that by doing it, the very useful thing that they are doing catches your attention. If you can, I would be very grateful if you could join in my support, by making a donation. On www.rmhc.org you can find out more information about Ronald McDonald houses – currently already active in 65 countries across the world.
If you are wondering about how much to give – how about an euro for every mile I’ll run? The marathon is 26.2 miles (42.2 km), so round it down to 25? This way there will be a direct connection between the marathon and the charity, and every step I take will increase the amount of funds raised for the Ronald McDonald houses, a thought to keep me going in the final stretches…
Thank you for giving it a moment of thought!
