Running to Keep Families Together!
In October 2019 my daughter Izzy was born at 30 weeks and 2lbs 14oz. As a result, we would go on to spend the next 10 weeks in the NICU at Edward Hospital. During our stay, the phenomenal NICU staff kept her alive and helped her grow. It was at that point I was introduced to the Ronald McDonald Family Room and learned about the great work that Ronald McDonald House Charities (RHMC) does.
Over the course of our stay the Family Room was a chance to step away from the chaos of the NICU for a little bit. It was a calm place to get a warm meal. Most importantly, it was a way for me to do those things without having to leave the hospital so I could stay close.
My experience with RMHC did not end at Edward. Due to a rare condition, Izzy required surgery the summer after she was born. It is a rare enough condition that we looked for specialists all over the US, and eventually it took us to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH.
We were in Columbus for 10 days, and we were able to spend our time there in a room at the Ronald McDonald House across the street from the hospital. In the days leading up to the surgery we were able to all stay together in the room. Once she was admitted, my wife and I rotated between staying with her in the hospital getting a good night's sleep in the room. With the room so close it made it easy for us to stay together. Even with COVID restrictions RMHC was there for us.
On October 10th, I will be representing Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) at the 2021 Bank of America Chicago Marathon! As a member of Team RMHC, I will be training, fundraising and ultimately running 26.2 miles to help keep families together.
RMHC helps millions of families each year, including mine. RMHC helps families cope better and focus on the needs of their sick child, allowing them the ability to spend more time with their child, to interact with their doctors, and to make important decisions about their child’s care.
It costs approximately $100 to give a family one night of comfort and support. Your donation, of any amount, will not only help me achieve my goal, but will help children stay close to their families when they need it most!
UPDATE 9/16/21: Holy Cow! I am floored at the response and generosity of everyone! Thank you so much for supporting Team RMHC! I wanted to give a quick update on my training with only a few weeks left to race day. I have kept up with the training plan and am very much on track for the race. To date my long run has been 20 miles, and that's right where I want to be. After this weekends long run (which is also 20 miles +) I will begin to taper and rest in prep for race day.
