Winson's fundraising page
G’day mates,
On October 8th, I will be representing Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) at the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon! As a member of Team RMHC, I will be training, fundraising and ultimately running 26.2 miles to help keep families together.
My own personal interest in RMHC started over 25 years ago. Nicole and I were just out of college and engaged and we found out that Nicole had relapsed. We were married on short notice and had to plan the logistics around being in Seattle for several months of treatment. Certainly, being separated was not an option. There were a lot of finances to figure out with living expenses in Seattle and managing bills back home, while having to take a leave of absence from work and trying to live off disability. The financial aspect was pretty daunting for a young newlywed couple, early in their professional careers, that had much more important things to focus on. We were very surprise when we heard RMHC had offered to put us up for Nicole’s treatment. Clearly, Nicole and I were not children at that point but their flexibility and compassion were greatly appreciated. We did not end up staying there, as the insurance company ended up paying for our housing. But it is a kindness I have never forgotten.
Recently, in our time in Canberra, Wendy and I have had the opportunity to support the local chapter of RMHC. And having just completed my 23rd marathon, it reminded me that my first several marathons were run for charity. Running the Chicago Marathon seemed like a good opportunity to help a charity that does so much good.
Did you know RMHC helps millions of families each year? RMHC helps families cope better and focus on the needs of their sick child, allowing them the ability to spend more time with their child, to interact with their doctors, and to make important decisions about their child’s care.
It costs approximately $100 to give a family one night of comfort and support. Your donation, of any amount, will not only help me achieve my goal, but will help children stay close to their families when they need it most!
Your support is greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Winson
